The Texan wild marrow, Cucurbita texana, with small hard-skinned fruits, is viewed as an ancestor of the garden marrow. Archaeological finds in Mexico indicate cultivation of the small-seeded varieties around 7000-5000 BC. As soon as 50 years after the discovery of the Americas, numerous cultivated varieties were distributed in Europe. The bushy variety known as zucchini (courgette) produces elongated cucumber-like fruit. In contrast to pumpkin, stems and leaves are mostly very hairy. The flesh of the fruit contains fibers and does not fall apart on boiling.

'The Marrow originated in South America in the 12th century, however the first plant wasn't readily available until the 19th century. Here in England around 1884 early scientists proved that the Marrow was actually created for more potent reasons than they had first thought. They had discovered that the Marrow was actually cross breeding with other South American plants and had been transformed into a gateway drug. It has grown to giant proportions over recent decades and is now as commen in school playgrounds as carrots or peas. Recent news stories have proved that Marrows can be as addictive as "Crack", "Smack" or even the killer "Leek". However after a revamp of British Laws it has now been proved that you cannot die from a lethal dose of Marrow and from May next year the law will be change and you will no longer be arrested for possesion. Please take note of this warning and until May of next year - KEEP THAT MARROW IN YOUR POCKET.'
